BIOGRAPHY of MAX MCGEE

In June of 2007 Max was chosen as President of the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Previously, after completing a three-year term as State Superintendent, Glenn “Max” McGee was the Superintendent of Wilmette School District 39. He is also Chairman of the Golden Apple Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors of the Great Books Foundation, and a member of both the Governor’s Educational Excellence Task Force and the Task Force for Education Accountability.

Dr. McGee has served as a substitute teacher, middle school teacher, principal, and superintendent of three suburban districts. He is an avid writer who has published numerous articles and speaks at national conferences. He recently presented at several national conferences including AASA, NASB, the American Education Research Association Conference, and the International Reading Association Annual meeting. He also is a regular speaker on leadership at conferences throughout Illinois. His first book, What Every Superintendent and Principal Needs to Know: School Leadership for the Real World, is in its second printing.

Dr. McGee’s recent research on high achieving, high poverty schools that have closed the achievement gap has garnered state and national attention for identifying how schools and communities can help all students succeed. In 2004, the Journal for the Education of Students Placed at Risk published this study on Illinois’ Golden Spike schools. His mission is to make an “enduring difference” in the lives of all children and share his passionate commitment and support for Illinois’ educational leaders.

Dr. McGee’s real passion is his family. He and his wife Jan, who is the Executive Director of the Associated Colleges of Illinois’ Center for Success in High Needs Schools, have three children and an energetic grandson, Trent. Max has retired from running marathons, but is still an avid triathlete, placing first in three races last year.

Max participated in the revising and updating of the second edition of What Every Superintendent and Principal Needs to Know in 2007 and co-authored the book The Perfect School (with Jim Rosborg and Jim Burgett)—all in the same year!
